Tajamal Shah, Barrister Managing Director

Tajamal Shah, brings extensive legal and managerial experience to the firm, having worked both in private and public sectors in various jurisdictions including UK and Pakistan. For nearly 30 years’, he has been associated with the legal profession, having worked both in private practice as well as in inhouse.

He has profound understanding of legal and commercial risk management, whether it be on high value and complex transactional work or within a business environment. He has been at the forefront on promoting compliance within businesses across the South Asia area, by educating and providing training on various regulatory issues as well as designing and implementing compliance programs and governance processes.

Tajamal, grew up in England and in 1989 was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn. In 1999, he re-qualified as a Solicitor for England and Wales and also gained an LLM in international business transactions from UCL, London.

He began his career with BEAMA Ltd, where he specialized in developing and drafting standardized terms and conditions for mechanical and engineering contracts for the construction industry. He then joined the UK civil service in the Department of Trade and Industry where he was responsible for providing oversight to the financial and insurance sector as well the development and drafting of regulations for the industry.

He then moved to the Exports Credit Guarantee Department UK, as Senior Legal Advisor, working on high value asset and project financing transactions, as well as an extensive number of aircraft financing transactions. These transactions were mainly for the sale of Airbus and Boeing commercial aircrafts to leading airlines and involved complex tax driven finance structures, including the first securitisation structure backed by a government guarantee.

Later, he joined DLA Piper, a leading international law firm, as a Senior Associate in its banking department, where he dealt with complex property and asset finance transactions, including aircraft finance.

At the end of 1999, he joined BAT plc. He has held various senior roles with BAT including Global Regulatory Counsel, Area General Counsel as well as Area Head of Legal and External Affairs for BAT South Asia Area. In these roles, he managed varied legal and commercial risks, including designing various compliance programs as well as building and leading several legal teams across various jurisdictions. He was instrumental in designing various compliance programs for the BAT businesses across South Asia area and embedding good governance.

He has immense experience in working with government stakeholders, in order to deal with tax issues and engaging for promulgations of sensible regulations impacting various industries.

On the general commercial side, Tajamal has handled complex tax and legal issues, as well as managing high value litigation.

He has worked in various legal jurisdictions amongst others UK, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Canada, Japan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Afghanistan.

His primary practice is now in transactional work, taxation, regulatory and compliance work.

Ijaz Shah has spent his life working for the government revenue department at various levels, retiring Member Federal Board of Revenue. He has vast experience in all fields of taxation amongst others income tax, sales tax and customs. He has worked with many major organizations advising them on their tax matters as well as structuring their business for optimization of tax benefits.

Suhail Nazam, LLB(UK), LLM(UK), Barrister

A formidable labour lawyer with over 16 years of experience, having appeared in front of various quasi-judicial forums as well as in front of the NIRC and the High Court. He specializes mainly in employment and labour law but also has experience in general commercial matters, which includes intellectual property and taxation. He acts for major businesses of Pakistan including several multinationals, such a Pakistan Tobacco Company.

Syed Faraz Raza, LLB (UK), LLM (King’s College), Advocate

He has represented clients in front of High Courts, District and Session Courts as well as in many quasi-judicial forums.

Mohammad Haider Imtiaz, LLB, Advocate

Haider is a savvy commercial lawyer, with extensive transactional experience has well as formidable litigation exposure. He has represented clients in diversified civil before various judicial fora including the civil and district courts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar High Courts, as well as quasi-judicial and regulatory bodies including the Federal Ombudsmen and the National Tariff Commission.  Furthermore, has developed a good practice in advisory work, providing other legal services including legal advice and consultancy services to government organizations, private companies, non-governmental organizations, activists, journalists, politicians and businessmen; also involved in human rights and public interest advocacy and litigation.
